Trailblazing Women in Cinema: Lost in Translation (Bonnie Katz Film Series)

Join us for this year's Bonnie Katz Film Series, highlighting Trailblazing Women in Cinema. From March through May, the Ossining Public Library will be screening a series of groundbreaking, award-winning films by women directors.

Our third selection is Lost in Translation (2003), directed by Sofia Coppola and starring Scarlett Johansson and Bill Murray. It portrays the unlikely friendship between an aging American actor and a young American student following a chance encounter in a Tokyo hotel. The film was highly praised upon its release, receiving numerous accolades including nominations for Best Picture, Best Director and Best Original Screenplay (won) at the 76th Academy Awards. Sofia was the first American woman ever to receive a Best Director nomination, and though she did not win, she paved the way for Kathryn Bigelow to do so in 2008 for her film "The Hurt Locker".

This series is being held in honor of our OPL colleague Bonnie Katz (1952-2021). A librarian and passionate film buff, Bonnie had a positive spirit and outgoing personality, and was a respected member of our profession and the Ossining community.
